Dylan Zacharias Captures First Career Brewerton Big Block Modified Win

By Hannah Doll

BREWERTON, NY (June 5, 2023)- Friday night, Brewerton Speedway celebrated Independence Day weekend by hosting a large crowd to witness the Empire Super Sprints invade the 'D-Shaped Dirt Demon' for night three of CNY Speedweeks. In the end, it was a first-time Modified winner, Dylan Zacharias, that stole the show.

Other feature winners included Jason Barney (Empire Super Sprints), Nicholas Root (DOT Foods DIRTcar Sportsman) and Chris Bonoffski (Mirabito DIRTcar 4-Cylinder Super Stocks).

Jeff Prentice and Jim Witko Jr. paced the Tracey Road Modified field to the Comfort Windows firing point bringing the field to green for the 35-lap feature event. The start would be short lived as Witko and Prentice came together in turn 3 sending the field scattering behind them.

Point leader Tim Sears Jr. and his uncle Tom Sears, Jr, a feature winner in 2024, got the worst end of the tangle, each suffering significant race-ending damage. Prentice would also be forced pit side for the night, while recent winner Chris Hile sustained significant damage but would continue after lengthy repairs in the pits.

Zacharias and Todd Root inherited the front row and would now lead the field to green with Zacharias shooting out to the early race lead, with Darren Smith taking over second on lap 2.

Zacharias, from the outset, showed he had a car capable of winning the race. He cruised out front with Smith in tow through the early portions of the race before a lap 16 Milton CAT Caution would slow the field.

On the restart it was more of the same for the Central Square, NY driver as he again opened up a close but comfortable lead. Smith kept Zacharias honest, staying within a few car lengths but never really provided a significant challenge.

A third and final Milton CAT Caution would fly on lap 30 giving Smith one more shot at Zacharias. It was for not, however, as Zacharias proved too much to overcome as he raced to his first career Brewerton Speedway Tracey Road DIRTcar Modified Victory.

Smith would settle for the runner-up position, with 13th place starter Larry Wight rounding out the podium. Ronnie Davis III would come in fourth, with 15th starting Jimmy Phelps completing the top 5.

Zacharias became the second first time Modified winner in as many weeks joining Jackson Gill who captured his first Modified main event win on June 28.

In the Empire Super Sprints event, Jason Barney delivered an incredible performance, leading every lap of their feature event but would be forced to fend off a late race challenge from Chris Hile to take the win. Hile, in just his second season of part-time ESS competition, gave the veteran Barney all he could handle over the last few laps but Barney proved to be too much. Hile would settle for second with twelve-starter Jordan Poirier coming in third. Danny Varin would come home fourth, with Davie Franek rounding out the top 5.

Nicholas Root picked up the win for the DOT Foods Sportsman over ninth starter Tony Finch. Riley Rogala would cross the line in third, with tenth starting Cody Manitta following in fourth. Zach Sobotka completed the top 5.

Chris Bonoffki continued his winning ways, picking up another Mirabito 4-Cylinder Super Stock feature win. Zak Petrie would cross in second, with Tony Frezzo, Clayton Koch, and Steven Burdick rounding out the top 5.
