Rookie Ron Davis III Stuns Brewerton Speedway Modified Field With Popular Opening Night Victory
BREWERTON, NY – Coming into Friday night’s season opener at the Brewerton Speedway, Memphis, NY racer Ron Davis III’s only laps in a big block modified was during a test & tune session earlier this month.
Friday night at the Brewerton Speedway Davis drove like anything but a rookie grabbing the crowd-popular win in his first start driving for the Coar-Clark owned Tracey Road Equipment, TamCo Management Group, No.32R, Bicknell.
In the 35-lap Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar Modified feature Davis ran down leader Pat Ward taking the lead on lap 16 using a power-move on the top of the speedway exiting turn four. Once in the lead Davis drove a flawless race in and out of traffic beating Tom Sears Jr. to the checkers by 1.596 seconds.
Other winners on McDonald’s ® Restaurants night were Jason Barney (Empire Super Sprints) Chris Mackey & Kevin Root (DOT Foods DIRTcar Sportsman) and Evan Wright (Fleet Repair Truck & Trailer Repair 4-Cylinders).
Pat Ward and Chris Hile would bring the field down to the green for the 35-lap modified feature with Ward grabbing the early advantage.
The yellow would wave on lap 3 when defending track champion Jimmy Phelps slowed, heading pit-side and would not return.
With 10 laps showing on the scoring tower Ward still was fast out front with Ron Davis III, Larry Wight, Tom Sears Jr.and Chris Hile not far behind locked in a battle in the top-five.
On lap 15 Ward’s lead shrunk as he was being hounded by Davis who would need just one more lap to drive by Ward using the top of the speedway exiting turn four.
When lap 20 hit, Davis and Ward were in a two-car breakaway at the front of the field with Wight, Sears and Billy Decker slugging it out for third through fifth.
Over the final laps, with no yellows the rest of the distance to tighten the field up for a dash to the checkers, there was no stopping Davis for his first big block modified victory. Tom Sears Jr., Larry Wight, Pat Ward and Billy Decker finished second through fifth.
In the first 25-lap Sportsman feature Corey Barker would grab the lead at the drop of the green and by lap 5 jumped out to a half a straightaway lead.
On lap 10 Barker opened almost a full straightaway lead while behind him, Chris Mackey, Billy Clark Jr., Mark Yorker and Alan Fink showed in the top-five.
With 10 laps remaining Mackey ran down Barker as they were in a two-car fight for the lead. Yorker, Clark and Fink raced for third through fifth.
After working on a way by Barker, Mackey using the top of the speedway was able to drive into the lead on lap 18 and never be headed the rest of the distance. Corey Barker, Mark Yorker, Alan Fink and Billy Clark Jr. finished second through fifth in the caution-free race.
In the second 25-lap Sportsman feature Mike Stanton Jr. grabbed the lead at the drop of the green turning quick laps out front while the field behind him was two and three wide fighting for positions.
With 5 laps complete Stanton held a five car length advantage over defending track champion Kevin Root. Amy Holland, Jeff Taylor and Rich Townsend were locked in a tight fight for top-five spots.
On lap 9 Root made a power move in turns three & four, driving around Stanton into the lead.
Root was on cruise control out front with 10 laps to go with a half a straightaway lead over Stanton. Holland, Taylor and Jim Spano showed on the scoring tower in third through fifth.
Over the final laps there was no stopping Root as he cruised to the win in the caution-free feature. Mike Stanton Jr., Amy Holland, Jim Spano and Rich Townsend rounded out the top-five.
The Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints made their first of three visits to the Brewerton Speedway in 2019 with over 30 cars signed into the pits.
The 25-lap Don Gillette Memorial A-Main would see Dave Axton lead the opening 10 laps when Jason Barney would drive into the lead on lap 11.
Once out-front Barney would have to hold off a late charge from Danny Varin for the popular hometown win. Davie Franek, Larry Wight and Chuck Hebing finished third through fifth.
The caution-free 15 lap 4-Cylinder feature would see Evan Wright hold off the heavy hitters of the division for the win. Ray Bechler, Chris Bonoffski, Quinn Wallis and Jerry Curcie Jr. finished second through fifth.
A huge thanks goes out top Eric Fink and the track crew. Extremely wet spring conditions could have led to unfavorable racing conditions. The speedway was fast all night with three racing grooves providing two and three-wide racing.
